Small enough to hold in one hand. Just wide enough for a careful arrangement of whatever the table needs beside the main dish.
This is the 국화 원찬기 (Gukhwa Wonchangi) — a chrysanthemum side bowl from Tovy's Gobaekja series. Gobaekja (고백자) is a contemporary interpretation of traditional Korean Baekja (백자, white porcelain), lighter than standard ceramics yet durably fired, with a creamy matte surface that reads as understated refinement. The hand-painted chrysanthemum (국화, Gukhwa) carries its own history: a flower associated in Korean culture with longevity, endurance, and the quiet dignity of late autumn. Microwave, oven, and dishwasher safe, this bowl moves between the ceremonial and the everyday without losing anything in the transition.
Set with three or four others on a traditional Korean dinner table, the round form takes its place in the classic chan-gi (찬기) arrangement, designed precisely for this spread. Used as an individual serving bowl for dipping sauces, nuts, or a small dessert portion at a dinner party, it holds what it is given with the same quiet composure. Gifted as part of a collected set for someone building a considered ceramic kitchen, it starts a conversation that grows over many meals.
Crafted from non-toxic, pure traditional materials. Minor variations in the hand-painted motif are inherent — and welcome. Handcrafted in South Korea for Tovy.
