The chrysanthemum does not bloom for display. It opens in late autumn, when everything else has withdrawn — a small insistence against the season.
The Gobaekja Chrysanthemum Plate 23 cm is made from Gobaekja (고백자) clay — a speckled stoneware that reads as earthen and warm in the hand, a contemporary expression of the Joseon Baekja (백자) tradition. At its centre, a single white Gukhwa (국화, Chrysanthemum) is painted by hand — the scholar's flower, a symbol of longevity and quiet resilience in Korean culture. High-fire kiln finishing brings both durability and a lightness that defies the plate's substance. Dishwasher and microwave safe, this is Korean minimalism made functional: the pattern earns its place, and nothing else is added.
A dinner plate for a considered weeknight table, the chrysanthemum is visible beneath whatever is placed on it — a quiet companion to the meal. Used for traditional jeon or banchan presentation, the speckled glaze holds its own against bold flavours and colours. Displayed on an open shelf between uses, the hand-painted motif reads clearly from a distance without needing framing.
Part of the Gobaekja Chrysanthemum Collection. A plate that treats daily use as the occasion it was made for. Handcrafted in South Korea for Tovy.
