A single chrysanthemum, hand-painted at the centre of a 27 cm surface. The rest: speckled white, and silence.
This dinner plate is from Tovy's Gobaekja series — a contemporary interpretation of Joseon Baekja (백자), the white porcelain revered for its refusal to compete with what is placed upon it. The speckled, matte-white Gobaekja (고백자) glaze speaks directly to Korea's own ceramic tradition of finding beauty in restraint and imperfection — what might be called the beauty of white space. The central chrysanthemum (국화, Gukhwa) is one of the Sagunja (사군자, Four Gentlemen of Korean scholarly culture) — a symbol of strength, dignity, and the integrity of something that blooms late, when everything else has gone quiet. Dishwasher and microwave safe.
Used as the main dinner plate in a considered table setting, the matte white surface makes any food colour stand out with clarity. Displayed on an open kitchen shelf between meals, it earns its place as a ceramic object worthy of being seen. Gifted as a statement piece to someone building a slow, intentional kitchen aesthetic, it carries the weight of Korean craft without drawing attention to itself.
Minor variations in the speckled pattern and glaze are natural — they are what makes this plate yours. Handcrafted in South Korea for Tovy.
