Kim Tae-san White Porcelain Pattern Ceramic Coaster

This elegant ceramic coaster, the 도자 코스터 (백자, Doja Koseuteo), is a celebration of the high aesthetic and pure form of Joseon Dynasty White Porcelain (백자, Baekja). Crafted by artist Kim Tae-san, the design takes patterns and colours from esteemed historical artifacts and reinterprets their traditional beauty with a clean, contemporary sensibility.

Made from absorbent ceramic, the coaster is highly effective for managing moisture, resistant to odours, and easy to maintain—a perfectly practical and hygienic accessory. The pure white base reflects the noble and understated elegance for which Joseon porcelain is renowned.

Design Heritage Reference

  • White Porcelain Blue-and-White Jar with Vine Design (백자청화넝쿨무늬항아리): This pattern is inspired by a jar bearing the inscription 'Un-hyeon,' referencing Unhyeongung, the residence of regent Heungseon Daewongun (1820–1898). It showcases the era's sophisticated taste, decorated with longevity mushrooms and scrolling vine patterns.

  • White Porcelain Blue-and-White Dish with Chrysanthemum and Cloud Design (백자청화국화구름무늬접시): While early Joseon porcelain favored undecorated pure white, this design reflects the flowering period of Joseon ceramics, featuring chrysanthemum and cloud patterns painted in cobalt blue (cheonghwa), demonstrating a diverse and artistic transition.

The quality of this piece is recognized through the artist's selection for the KCDF Craft Distribution Shop and the National Museum Product Contest.

💡 Care Instructions

  • Due to the material's nature, a fine powder may rub off on first use. We recommend rinsing it under running water and letting it air dry completely in the shade for about a day before initial use.

  • Do not wash with detergents or chemicals, as this may reduce absorption capacity.

  • Avoid dropping the product or applying excessive force to prevent cracks or breakage.
