Some gardens are planted; this one was cut, piece by piece, from shell.

Crimson, violet and blue peonies wind through jade scrollwork across the entire surface of this box, every petal hand-cut from tinted mother-of-pearl and set into pale lacquer between key-fret borders. An ornate fish-form clasp with twin tassels closes the lid.

The peony means wealth, honour and a life in bloom. The dangcho scrollwork threading between the flowers is drawn without a break, a line of continuing good fortune that connects every bloom to the next.

A mirror, velvet compartments and a removable tray wait inside. The most colourful expression of Korean najeon lacquerware in the collection, in three sizes.

For the maximalist, the colour-lover, the one whose jewellery was never going to live in a plain box.

Handcrafted in South Korea. Each box varies subtly in shell iridescence and lacquer depth — this is the character of najeon.
