Peonies in full bloom, caught in shell instead of paint.

The Mokdan box covers its domed lid and body in mother-of-pearl peonies: ivory blooms with touches of rose and jade over a shimmering abalone ground, closed by an ornate fish-form clasp with twin tassels.

Mokdan is the peony, the king of flowers. In Korean craft it stands for wealth, honour and abundance, which is why it covered wedding chests and bridal screens for centuries. A box of peonies is a box of good fortune before anything is placed inside.

Here it arrives as najeon lacquerware with a mirrored lid, velvet compartments and a removable tray. Three sizes.

A bridal gift, a significant birthday, or simply the brightest object on the dresser.

Handcrafted in South Korea. Each box varies subtly in shell iridescence and lacquer depth — this is the character of najeon.
