Two birds, one long-standing promise.

A twin-cube Korean jewellery box joined at a butterfly clasp. Fold it open and four velvet drawers appear, two to a side, beneath a pale abalone ground where a pair of phoenixes face each other in hand-cut mother-of-pearl, their tails trailing violet, rose and sea-green as the light turns.

The phoenix is Korea's bonghwang, the male bong and the female hwang, and it is almost always shown as a pair. Together they stand for harmony between husband and wife, which is why they were embroidered onto wedding robes and carved into bridal chests. Butterflies drift through the key-fret border, adding joy to the blessing.

At 17cm wide it stays modest on a dresser while holding a full collection of rings, earrings and chains.

A wedding gift with the symbolism built in, or the box that finally gives tangled necklaces separate rooms.

Handcrafted in South Korea. Each box varies subtly in shell iridescence — this is the character of najeon.
