Scarlet has always been Korea's colour for celebration; here it earns the name.

Cranes rise over pine across a scarlet lacquer lid, while the body of the box shimmers with mother-of-pearl, a shifting field of abalone framed in a fine key-fret border and closed by a round coin-form clasp with a hand-knotted maedeup tassel.

Songhak reads as pine and crane. The pine holds its green through every season and stands for endurance; the crane, said to live a thousand years, carries longevity and high spirit. Set on scarlet, the blessing turns festive.

Inside: a mirrored lid, red velvet compartments and a removable tray. Korean najeon lacquerware in three sizes.
